Selling fringe tickets and I’m checking my sales reports on the minute every minute. It’s not a good use of my time. First, I don’t have all that many tickets to sell. Second, I don’t have all that many people to buy tickets.
However, it is one of the most powerful motivators there is for working as hard as I can to deliver the best show I can deliver. This is partly because those people have bought tickets so we’ve entered into an agreement—where I’ve agreed to honour the money they’ve paid to see me.
But on a much deeper level, the support of me and my work, the belief that people show in me by buying a ticket is genuinely moving. Each time I see another ticket sale, see someone’s name on the door list I think, ‘Really? They have that much faith in me and my work?’
