The candles we light before tomorrow night’s dinner will be for Amnesty International’s 50th birthday and I will tell the lads my most favourite of all Amnesty quotes:

Each candle burns not for us, but for all those whom we failed to rescue from prisons, who were shot on the way to prison, who were tortured, who were kidnapped, who ‘disappeared’. That’s what the candle is for.
Peter Benenson

And then I will tell them a human rights story or two, probably about child soldiers and the mothers of the disappeared and no doubt they will roll their eyes and say, ‘You already told us that‘, but I will keep talking, because I know that my words have the power of water on stone.
